Simple Storage Ideas For Kids' Rooms

When it comes to children's bedrooms and playrooms, it's vital to put the "fun" in "functionality." Finding creative solutions to storage needs helps you cut down on clutter in the room while keeping things light and playful. From toys to clothes, here are some unique ideas for storing the many items your child will accumulate as he or she grows up:

Toy Storage With Bins

Trellises

Toy Storage With Bins

While a trellis is normally reserved for the garden or patio, there's no reason you can't put one to good use in a child's bedroom or playroom. A regular garden trellis supplemented with pegs makes an attractive display for a tweenage girl's hat, purse or handbag collection. Planks of wood can also be suspended horizontally atop the pegs to create a fun and accessible storage space for dolls, stuffed animals, toy trucks or just about anything that will fit.

Cubbyholes and Repurposed Bookshelves

If you want to create storage spaces of various sizes to house your child's toys and books, stacking up some wooden cubbyholes with differing dimensions gives you options and flexibility. You can keep heavier, bulkier toys in the bottom cubbyholes and lighter items up top. Just make sure not to stack them so high your child can't reach his or her favorite things, or you won't get a moment's peace during playtime.

Remember, too, that bookshelves don't have to be just for books. You can place storage baskets and bins on the various shelves to store smaller toys and knickknacks. If you need to make the most of limited space, this type of solution works wonders.

Handcrafted Toy Boxes

Toy boxes are a mainstay of playrooms the world over, but you don't have to settle for the banality of the standard designs stocked by your local home furnishings outlet. If you've gone for a bold design in the room and need a specialized toy box to match the theme, or if you just want to add a personalized flair to your furnishings, a custom-made toy box can make all the difference.

Boutique furniture stores, local artisans and carpenters, and specialty retailers are the best places to find handcrafted items like toy boxes. If you deal directly with a producer, you can even incorporate your own unique ideas into the design. While this is a more expensive option, it will add an unmistakable touch of individuality to your child's favorite room.

Is It True That Die Cast Model Cars Are Valuable Collectors Items?

Model cars are valuable collectors items - at least to those who find them so. Some people just love them for their own sake, and so they value them, but others may need a certain, limited edition car no longer being made. Such a person may well pay you a premium for the car you just happen to own.

Toy Storage With Bins

This is what collecting is all about. An item is made in a limited edition, so many being produced and then no more, ever again. If the item remains in demand after the edition is sold out, the value of each individual example rises. So to make money with a collectible, you must find a buyer. Remember the craze for Beanie Babies? People paid high prices for them at one time, but the fad burned out, and now the buyers are mostly thrift shop bargain hunters.

Toy Storage With Bins

Model cars have not suffered the same fate. Dinky toys made in the 1930s are still found in attics and old toy boxes, and will not be thrown into a two for a dollar bin. Moreover, editions being released today still sell out. This is good news for those who collect model cars, which are 'scale' models or exact representations of original cars on a miniature scale, for investments.

Is it wise to collect die cast metal cars? You will either understand the impulse or you won't. Some people collect, while others call it clutter. But it is fun, it is affordable (which collecting fine art may not be), and many people have a personal connection to cars - fine pieces of machinery that go very, very fast.

Die casting is a manufacturing process that allows for exact proportions and delicate detailing, all of which are important to car fanciers, whether the cars are three inches long or actual Detroit models. When molten metal is forced in to a closed mold, with the high pressure used to fill the mold being sustained until the metal is firmly solidified, precision is maintained in every detail. Die casting can be used for plastic as well, but the collectibles seem to be all die cast metal. One day the plastic cars may attain collectible status as well, especially if fossil fuels go the way of the dinosaurs. Anything is possible. Who would have thought that old cigar boxes would be collectibles? Or fountain pens?

Dinky cars were all one piece, but now model cars have doors that open, real windows, trunks with storage space, and hoods that come up to reveal a Hemi inside. People may collect the cars they used to drive over the years, or the ones they hanker after (Jaguars and Bentleys and Thunderbirds with those little porthole windows). New editions may have details missed in an earlier run, or the exact model that was modified halfway through the year, or some other reason it is the one you want above all others.

You may start your collection yourself, because you've always wanted a General Lee and this is the only chance of having one, or you may get a car you've longed for in a package from your wife, wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree. It may be the start of a "better than a tie" tradition, or you may find the fun of it all turns you into an avid collector.

It is fun to find your modus operandi, like getting one of every muscle car that has achieved icon status, or having a scale model of the cars that zoomed through your childhood in your favorite TV shows. Maybe you like Funny Cars, or Models A through T, or Camaros. One day you, too, may be searching for the last car you need to fill out that display case. There are fun ways to display a collection, too. Miniature, authentic gas pumps, or little people just the right size, can fill out a diorama in a showcase or on the table in the hall.

Model cars are valuable collectors items, whether you are thinking in terms of personal enjoyment and life enrichment, or you are thinking with your wallet. Anyway, it is more fun and probably less risky than stocks and bonds.

A Few Shed Designs to Live By

This past winter seemed extra cold and extra long which meant extra hours in the home. You thought you had a lot of space in the house until you had to be shut-in for more time than anticipated. It woke you up to the fact that family members have grown and their interests have expanded creating lack of closet or any other type of storage space.

Toy Storage With Bins

New kitchen appliances or table top food preparation tools have increased and the kitchen is looking smaller and cluttered. Consider installing new kitchen cabinets or more shelves or storage bins in the pantry.

Toy Storage With Bins

The bedroom and the bathroom closets need new updating shelves and hanging space for better organization. A toy chest for the toddler will help with the toy clutter, and expanding closet and shelving in the other bedrooms would meet the needs of the older children.

Wow! There is a lot to do. Seems like a family meeting will be necessary to learn what changes or additions would best serve the family needs. You may want to bring to the table information on different types of storage sheds and take a family vote for the best remedy to fit the family needs.

Here is a checklist of a few shed designs to live by:

Lean to Garden shed Greenhouse Garage Motor shed Barn Pool Cabana Cottage After your family reviews the possible list let everyone vote on what type of shed will best serve the family needs. And since you are the woodworking enthusiast you decide if you want to add one other shed to the list.

Other critical decisions will include:

Function Size Electricity Plumbing Cost As you can see from the list the word 'shed' sometimes seems inappropriate because it may be decided that a square box with a roof may not be enough. The function of the storage shed is the deciding factor for the type of shed design that will be necessary to meet your needs.

Must-Have Auto Accessories For Family Travel

When traveling with the family, there are a few things you should never leave behind. Your car, van or SUV can get messy in a hurry if you don't plan ahead and organize, at least mentally, before you leave your home. Whether car trash or the kids' small toys, items can build up in your vehicle within just an hour or two. Luckily, there is an auto accessory to help combat almost every problem that can occur when you travel with kids.

Toy Storage With Bins

Avoid Car Litter

Toy Storage With Bins

Car litter can build up with just one stop at a convenient store or restaurant. Imagine a family of four, each with a drink and snack in hand every time you exit a store or restaurant! This equals at the very least six to eight pieces of car trash just for one stop. If you're taking a long 10-hour trip, that could equal about four or five stops and about 30 pieces of car litter! To help combat car litter, take along a car accessory made specifically for storing auto trash. This could be a small auto trash bin or two (for vans) to hold trash until you can get to the next store or restaurant. When you arrive at your next rest stop, you can empty the auto trash bin to prevent spills, leaks, and bad smells. A good car accessory for car litter might be a litterbag, plastic auto bin, or cloth litter bag. Plastic car litter bins often work best because they will not retain smells and are easy to wipe clean along the way.

Prepare for the Traveling Munchies

It seems kids are hungry and thirsty every hour on the hour when traveling. You can prepare for these traveling "munchies" and save lots of money by taking along some auto accessories for snacks and drinks. Take an ice cooler along and pack it full of can drinks or bottle drinks, juice bottles, or even milk. Have it readily available when the kids cry, "I'm thirsty!" When you compare the prices of buying packs of drinks at a local grocery to buying individual drinks at a convenient store, you'll see a tremendous savings. Also, organize snacks in advance. Take along snacks that are easy to eat and will not melt or leave excessive crumbs. Pack the snacks in individual baggies or small lunch pouches for each kid before leaving the home. Keep the snacks handy so you can hand them out as needed.

Prevent Messes and Spills

Another must-have auto accessory is a sturdy car console. Car consoles enable the driver and front passenger to store their drinks and snacks without the threat of spills and splashes. A car console can hold regular-sized soft drinks, cups, coffee mugs, and even sometimes auto cassettes or CDs and other small items.

Travel Toys and Games

When you travel with kids, you're likely to have toys and games to keep them occupied. Give each child a bag or plastic storage container to keep his or her games and toys organized. Let him or her know that every toy or game must be put in its container after use. An auto accessory that works great for storing small toys is a plastic auto bin. These can be used for car trash or toy storage. Other auto accessories that can make travel with kids more pleasant, safe, and fun include an auto emergency first aid kit, portable DVD players with headphones, car seat storage bags, lap trays for coloring and drawing, seatsaver mats, baby mirrors (attachable to seats), sun-block window shades, car seat covers for sun/heat protection, travel pillows and blankets, and compact auto organizers. With the right auto accessories, your family trip can be enjoyable, clean, and safe!

Antique White Bookshelf Kidkraft Storage Bins

Blockbusters (Toys From Recent Movies, Etc)

Every year, there will be at least one or two big movies with licensed toys packing the shelves. These are the Hot Toys, the ones that every kid absolutely HAS to have.

Toy Storage With Bins

Sometimes, these toys have a real lasting appeal. Some of us still treasure the memories of playing with our Ninja Turtles, or we still own our Jurassic Park dinosaurs (Geez, are we really parents already?!).

Toy Storage With Bins

But then, there are some toys that come and go in the blink of an eye. These ones wind up in the bargain bin at the toy store a month after the film leaves theatres, and most kids lose interest just as quickly. Remember the movie Congo? Yeah, neither do the kids who owned all of the action figures way back when.

With licensed toys, the basic rule that applies to storytelling also applies to buying toys. The only characters that really matter are the ones that we'll still remember years after seeing the movie. Even parents can name half the cast of Finding Nemo, we'll probably always have a soft spot in our hearts for Wall-E, every single one of Jim Henson's Muppets, and Indiana Jones. All of those properties had toys packing the shelves, and many of us still own our childhood favourites. The reason why is simple: Those were interesting, endearing characters. When movie producers make a film with dollar signs in their eyes, hoping to sell a lot of toys at the expense of telling a good story, you wind up with Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, which tanked so bad, in both box office and toy sales, that the Batman movie franchise actually had to take a near decade-long hiatus.

We're not saying you need to tell your kids what to like. Heck, some kids loved Batman & Robin, there's nothing wrong with that. Get your kids what they like. Just bear in mind that a lot of the buzz and the hype surrounding these summer blockbusters is generated by the studios in hopes of suckering parents into buying junky toys that the kids probably won't even like.

If there's one piece of advice we can give on this subject; don't buy your kids the toys until they've seen the movie.

It's not uncommon for kids to see the commercials for a movie and say "That looks fun!" They ask for all the toys and even clip out the proof of purchase cards on the back of the packages and send away for the mail-order secret decoder ring. Then... they actually watch the movie, and... it winds up being kind of boring. They put all the toys in a box, put the box under the bed, and forget all about it. Then a month or two later, they get the decoder ring in the mail, and they say "what the heck is this?" You could name dozens of movies like this off the top of your head, if it weren't for the fact that you've already forgotten that they exist!

That's how it can be with hype sometimes. It's easy to buy into, even when the characters the toymaker is selling aren't really all that interesting. Character toys are all about coming up with new stories for your favourite fictional characters. If the characters are boring or cliché, it can be tough to come up with any memorable adventures. Better characters make for better creative toys, and better memories.

Big Plastic Containers Can Be Used For Toy Display and Storage

Toy stores: kids love them, and parents... well, let's just say parents tolerate them, and leave it at that.

Toy Storage With Bins

The very thing that kids love about toy stores is what adults have trouble with--lots of choices. There are toys on the shelves, toys on the floor, toys in the air, toys mixed in with other toys, toys in the wrong place, toys with the wrong price tags... it becomes difficult for a parent to navigate through the aisles without feeling like he or she is going crazy.

Toy Storage With Bins

That's why, if you own or manage your own toy store, you should consider using big plastic containers for toy display and storage. Keeping the store organized will help the children to focus and the parents to feel as if they're in control.

Here are five easy ways your toy store can get organized using big plastic containers.
Countertop Displays. A checkout counter, like any other area of the store, should be clean and inviting. Consider big plastic containers with chocolates, peppermints, or little packages of cookies; adults on a diet might not want a whole candy bar, but they'll still toss a Hershey's Kiss in with their purchases now and then. Impulse Buys. Display some toys in the checkout lane. Give the kids something to look at, something to ask for, while Mom and Dad are waiting in line. Fish bowls full of balloons, hexagon jars with gumballs and Pez dispensers, and bins full of speciality or promotional items will attract kids' attention and are easy for parents to toss on top of the pile. Eye-level Displays. Fish bowls, acrylic bins, and other big plastic containers can be stacked one on top of the other, putting them at parents' eye level, or set side-by-side so kids can see them. Consider purchasing some display racks to hold these containers. Kids will see a veritable cornucopia of toys, and parents might happen upon the perfect gift for a birthday or Christmas. Back room organization. Don't organize the stockroom once a year... keep it organized with big plastic containers. Storage is a necessary component of organization. Have your small toys and impulse items in one place, the larger toys in another. And have plenty of plastic containers on hand in the office for files, reports, and invoices. Never lose anything again. Selling in Bulk. Schools, Boy and Girl Scouts, churches, and many other religious and civic organizations like to buy small toys in bulk, to pass out as party favors and stocking stuffers. Make it easy for them to transports their purchases; have plenty of big plastic containers on hand.

If you're a toy store owner, big plastic containers for toy display and storage are a must-have for your shop. You'll appeal to both the kids who want your merchandise and the adults who pay for it!

Build a Closet Out of the Closet - DIY

Closets are notoriously cluttered and too small. You can organize, create storage, use vertical space, but you still may be left feeling like whoever designed your closet must have been a minimalist. Sometimes it is helpful to build space outside of the closet to expand on your storage space.

Toy Storage With Bins

Closets "outside of the closet" are becoming more and more popular. These are commonly called "wardrobe closets". Some people use extra dressers or an armoire for extra space. You can also use a rolling garment rack for more room. These usually have a zip-up cover and make a great space for storing out-of-season clothing, coats, or suits. But, if you want something more permanent that you can use for your everyday clothes, then you might consider a wardrobe closet.

Toy Storage With Bins

The designs for wardrobe closets are really endless. For an industrial feel, you could hang a metal bar from chains attached to the ceiling. Place a shelf below for shoes, and you're done. You might dress it up a little by using sturdy metal hangers or black velvet hangers.

If the industrial feel is not for you, you can go with something more classic. Wooden shelves always look beautiful and are very sturdy. Decorative wooden brackets can turn a board into a beautiful work of art. If you're into DIY projects, you'll enjoy this one. Take your sculpted brackets and a board for a shelf and stain them to whatever color you want. Use a good varnish to finish it off and hang it up.

You can even buy pre-fabricated shelves with hanging bars, perfect for extra hanging storage. Get some decorative baskets or bins for the tops of the shelves. Top it off with some nice clothes hangers. You may like a sturdy wood hanger or coat hanger to finish off your project.

If you need even more space, consider some cabinetry. Cabinets can be purchased unfinished so that you can stain them whatever color you would like. Another option is to go with cedar and some cedar hangers, giving your wardrobe closet a really unique and beautiful look. You can install cabinets with hanging bars in between the different sections.

Another way to do it is to build an encased exterior closet. Install your shelves, bars and cabinets like normal, then encase it in solid pieces of wood. This "built-in" look is really popular. Add some finishing touches to make it your own and to keep it from looking homemade. You can use small 1"x2" boards on the front of each shelf. Use more to line the sides of the whole closet. With a little bit of crown moulding around the top and bottom, you've got yourself a professional looking "closet outside of the closet". Use matching, high-end clothes hangers to keep the look sophisticated and you're all done.
